PSEN1 (UniProt: P49768)
The presenilin 1 (PSEN1) and presenilin 2 (PSEN2) proteins are the major components of γ-secretase which participates in the cleavage of APP and produces the β-amyloid (Aβ) peptides. Loss-of-function mutations in PSEN1 protein are suspected to increase the ratio of Aβ42/Aβ401, which could produce more neuritic plaques with stronger damaging effects.
